A note from Jim Konowitz, AVAS organizer:
The Arkansas Valley Astronomical Society has been around for more than 20 years. I have had the rewarding opportunity to lead the group for many of those years. The time has come for me to seek someone who would be willing to take the reigns from me and take over the organization.
I am prepared to support in every way possible anyone interested through a transition period. My participation will continue with the group both with stargazing sessions and community involvement.
If you might be interested and have any questions please do no hesitate to contact me by email at ArkValAstro@gmail.com. There is absolutely no obligation making any kind of inquiry.
The Arkansas Valley Astronomical Society (AVAS) is a club of amateur astronomers, night sky enthusiasts, and telescope lovers based in Colorado’s beautiful Upper Arkansas River Valley. Most of our members live in Chaffee County, but we have members from Lake, South Park, Fremont and Saguache counties along with some part time members who spend only part of each year in our valley.
Whether you are serious about astronomy, or just wanting to learn more; we encourage you to Join AVAS and/or attend some of our stargazing sessions. We are a ‘laid back’ club, getting together approximately once a month to “talk stars”, look through members’ telescopes, socialize, and generally learn from each other about the night sky and all its wonders.
Check out our Astronomy News page for the latest issue of our announcements and to find out when and where our next scheduled meeting will be. More frequent highlights of night sky events are noted on our Facebook Page.
Note: The image above is the sun and planets to scale, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (the dwarf planet).
Enjoy our website and help keep Colorado’s beautiful night skies dark!
